APRIL 2017

UPDATE

I spent the months of January and February in Florida on my annual working vacation: Sanibel Island, on the tropical southwest coast, was my first stop, then a week with a friend at The Villages in the middle of the state finished off my time in the sunny South.

I taught lots of watercolor classes on Sanibel Island and painted some new designs for Mackinac Island for the upcoming summer season. I spent lots of time painting outdoors—the condo that I rent is built into a botanical garden and is well-suited as an artist’s residence. I also painted with a plein air group there, so I filled one whole watercolor sketchbook journal with paintings of my adventures with the group.

NEW PAINTINGS

The AZALEAS were at their peak and I loved sitting under the oaks hung with Spanish moss as I painted in the South. I bought this PURPLE ORCHID at the wonderful farmers market on Sanibel Island. It thrived for six weeks with minimum care—my kind of houseplant!  My FRUITS AND VEGGIES collage is an experiment in combining poetry with painting. PINK FLOWERS-GREEN POT was painted for a friend as a housewarming gift. The new flower paintings are available in notecards and 5x7 and 8x10 matted prints. The collage is available only in a 9x12 unmatted print.

CURRENT PROJECTS

I am currently scheduling classes and artist appearances for the summer season. Last year at this time I was working around a massive remodeling and reorganizing project in my studio and home workplace. Thankfully, that’s all finished now and I can concentrate on this season’s artwork and class planning.

UPCOMING EVENTS

I am scheduled to make artist appearances at Little Luxuries Artists Market on Mackinac Island’s Main Street on these dates, all on Fridays from 2-4 pm: June 16 and 30, July 7 and 21, and August 18 and 25. I will be demonstrating my techniques and you can come to watch me paint and talk with me.  I’ll be happy to see you!

BOOKS

New this month is A Visit to Mackinac Island available in spiral bound or accordion style. I loved putting these together from my watercolor sketches done in my journal during the last few years. They will soon be available on my website and this summer at fine gift shops on Mackinac Island.

My previously published titles, Mackinac Island Meditations, and Garden Meditations, are available on my website and in Mackinac Island gift shops.

FEED YOUR SOUL/QUOTE OF THE MONTH

“Do not hide inside yourself” is engraved above the fireplace in Villa de Maser, a vineyard in the Veneto Region of Italy where I visited last year. “Hide inside yourself” is another way of saying “play small.” When we play small we don’t allow ourselves to come to full bloom. How many times have you not spoken up or given your idea in a gathering? “Everyone in the world loses when someone plays small,” says Valerie Young, author of Secret Thoughts of Successful Women. So do yourself and the whole world a favor—don’t hide inside yourself.

My soul is filled with connections I’ve made with people who do not hide inside themselves. It’s thrilling to be in their company as we listen and learn from each other. I experienced plenty of that while in the Florida arts community I was part of over the winter and look forward to even more this summer back home in northern Michigan. In the meantime, I’ve found several online artists groups where I’ve found the support I need to keep developing as an artist. Whenever artists gather, wonderful things happen as we encourage one another to not hide inside ourselves.
