FALL 2017

I’ve been very busy this summer as I painted on Mackinac Island and all around northern Michigan.

“View from West Bluff, Mackinac Island” is the painting I did during my time as a featured artist at the Grand Garden Show last month. The garden I was invited to was a riot of color and so much fun to paint.

“Bliss Store,” “small batch,” and “Good Hart Library” are light-hearted looks at northern Michigan locations that I painted while on outings with my plein air group. These four designs are available in cards and prints from my website,

My “Renew” series is available only as postcards. These would be perfect to send as a get well package of four, singly, or as a little reminder to tack up on your own wall at your home or office. Available in full color or in black and white as color-them-yourself postcards.

I’ve had very successful classes this summer and now I’m planning for my fall and winter classes. I’ll be teaching an introductory watercolor class at the annual Women on Fire conference in Miami Beach in October—an exciting location! My Sanibel Island (Florida) classes will begin as soon as I arrive in January, so I’ll prepare for those soon.

Along with filling orders for stores here in the area and working on commissioned paintings, I’m staying quite busy.

What a wonderful time I had at the Grand Garden Show on beautiful Mackinac Island: an opening reception on the Grand Hotel porch, sketching in the Grand’s adorable herb garden, painting all day in a wonderfully-developed garden on the West Bluff, and a gala reception at which I sold the painting I’d worked on all day (then took commissions for three others). A fun and successful two days!

My Three Villages Plein Air Group’s exhibit is now up at Three Pines Studio in Cross Village through September 12. Work, including mine, from twelve artists is shown: landscapes, storefronts, barns, gardens, beach scenes…whatever we saw while painting out in the open air this past summer on Wednesday mornings. Gallery hours vary this time of year, so call (231) 526-9447 for details.

Other classes will be added as time goes by—watch future newsletters, my website, and Facebook for additions.

I love my Facebook followers—last month I reached 1000, which absolutely thrills me. I post a painting nearly every day and enjoy each comment viewers make and love to see where my followers are from. If you’re not already one of them, please join the fun at "Watercolor Paintings by Mary Lou Peters." If you already follow me on Facebook, thank you so much!

What has fed your soul this summer? Has it been the wonderful weather? The blooming flowers that change every week? Spending time with family and friends?  For me it’s all the students I’ve connected with in the many classes I’ve taught. It’s so exciting to watch beginning painters catch on to a concept I’m teaching, practice it, watch creativity do its thing as they change it a little and then make it their own. This process is truly magical to me and it’s amazing how it works. Every time I experience it, I get chills. If you’d like to read a great book about creativity, I highly recommend BIG MAGIC by Elizabeth Gilbert. Her opening quote in the book sets the stage:

“Q: What is creativity?
A: The relationship between a human being and the mysteries of inspiration.”
